INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
1. Agreements on Academic and Student Exchange
Through academic and student cooperative exchange agreements established with a number of higher education institutions abroad, Shiga University is expanding and enhancing student / faculty exchange, joint research and educational research.
Currently, we have concluded university-wide academic agreements with 27 universities and 1 consortium.

2. Research Activities
In accordance with these agreements, faculty members of involved institutions take part in research visits of short and long durations.
The Center for Risk Research has been conducting joint research projects with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (China), Keimyung University (Korea), and the National Economics University (Vietnam).
Members of the Faculty of Education have been pursuing a variety of projects with Chiang Mai University and Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (Thailand) for more than 10 years.
Members of the Faculty of Economics are pursuing joint research with the Universidad de Guanajuato (Mexico).
In addition to these programs affiliated with partner universities overseas, many Shiga University faculty members have been actively pursuing their research, visiting foreign institutions of higher learning or participating in international conferences.
3. Student Exchange Programs
Based on the student exchange agreements with 20 universities and 1 consortium, we have sent students to various overseas universities. We also accept about 25 exchanging students from our partner universities each year. They come to Shiga University for one or two semesters and study in the Faculty of Economics or in the Faculty of Education in addition to taking Japanese language classes. The number of students participating in exchange programs is increasing in recent years. For details of exchange programs and application procedures, please refer to the following page.
4. Study Tours
Shiga University International organizes 7 study tour programs with a help from our partner universities abroad for Shiga University students. In each study tour, students will not only learn language and culture but also have various intercultural experiences during the program. Currently we have an Intensive English Language Program at Michigan State University, “Thai Eco-Study Tour” in Thailand, Korean Language and Culture Program at Keimyung University, Chinese Language Program at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, Australian Studies Program at Deakin University, Spanish Language and Mexican Culture Program at the Universidad de Guanajuato, and English language and culture program at Leeds Trinity University. About 50 students participate in these programs each year.
We have also hosted short-term study tours and student groups from our partner universities, such as Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, Deakin University and Universidad de Guanajuato.



5. International Students
We have a total of 158 international students (undergraduate, graduate, research and exchange students) representing 9 countries. At the Graduate School of Education, we also accept MEXT scholarship teacher training students for one year or 18 months.
Shiga University International offers orientation for incoming international students at the beginnings of spring and fall semesters. The SUI also offers Japanese language training courses for international students, and “student-tutor” support services, mostly for exchange students and first-year students on both campuses.
A limited number of scholarships from private foundations are available for international students to help with their living expenses and tuition fees.

6. International House
The International House is a housing facility for international students and researchers.
It is a three-storied reinforced concrete building, located about five minutes’ walk from the Hikone campus.
